BBC Media Action concludes Digital Media Literacy workshop in Isabel Province
BBC Media Action concluded a two-day Digital Media Literacy Workshop in Buala, Isabel Province, opened by Deputy Premier Tony Vahia under the theme “Strengthening community voices and understanding misinformation and disinformation.” Seventeen participants, including Isabel Provincial government department heads and community stakeholders, learned to enhance digital media literacy and address misinformation, with Ben Bilua of Island Sun leading practical training on identifying misinformation, responsible use of digital platforms, building trust between communities and media, and amplifying local voices on issues such as mining and climate adaptation. The workshop ended on 11 March with certificates and plans for applying new skills in workplaces and communities. This initiative forms part of BBC Media Action’s ongoing Pacific-wide media development and resilience work, delivered in partnership with local media organisations and funded by the UK government.

An inaugural Digital Media Literacy Workshop was held in Buala, Isabel Province, this month, representing a significant advancement in media development within the region.
17 participants took part in the event, representing various departmental heads from the Isabel Provincial government and community stakeholders from across Buala. The cohort included government officials, community leaders, and civil society representatives, united in their objective to enhance digital media literacy and address misinformation locally. Their participation highlighted the provincial government’s dedication to cultivating informed communities and reinforcing collaboration with media development partners.
Facilitated by the BBC Media Action and led by experienced community-based trainer and Island Sun Senior Journalist Ben Bilua, the workshop delivered practical training in several key areas:
- identifying and countering misinformation and disinformation
- responsible use of digital platforms
- fostering trust between communities and media
- amplifying local voices on issues such as mining and climate adaptation
Participants actively contributed to discussions, shared relevant experiences, and examined how digital tools can promote accurate information and strengthen community cohesion.
The workshop concluded on Wednesday 11 March, with attendees receiving certificates of participation and being encouraged to formulate actionable strategies to apply their newfound skills within their workplaces and communities.
This initiative is part of BBC Media Action’s ongoing efforts to promote media development and community resilience across the Pacific, in partnership with local media organisations including the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC), Island Sun, Solomon Star, Tavuli News, In-depth Solomons, SBM Online, and the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI).
