Exeter’s Defence Data Research Centre (DDRC), a core component of Exeter’s Defence, Security and Resilience network, has become a partner in the development of a nationally significant defence cluster.

The Huntingdonshire Defence Cluster brings together organisations from defence, industry, academia and the public sector with the aim of driving economic growth in the Huntingdonshire region and beyond, through the creation of a world-leading ecosystem for defence, intelligence, innovation, geo-spatial technologies and advanced manufacturing.

It builds on the region’s deep roots and connections with the defence community, including RAF Wyton, RAF Alconbury and RAF Molesworth.

In a ceremony signed during Cambridge Tech Week, the Defence Data Research Centre committed to contributing its expertise in data science, computer science, and social science to the project.

Professor Zena Wood, an Associate Professor in Digital Economy and Director of the Defence Data Research Centre (DDRC), said: “We are thrilled to have signed this shared commitment to support the delivery of a nationally significant centre for defence intelligence, innovation and advanced technology, bringing together government, industry and academia to create high-skilled jobs and drive economic growth.”

Michelle Sacks, Chief Executive of Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “We are delighted to welcome the University of Exeter’s Defence Data Research Centre as a partner in the Huntingdonshire Defence Cluster. The insight that organisations such as DDRC bring will play an important role as we continue to grow the cluster and strengthen the connections between innovation, skills, and investment. We look forward to working together to support growth and new opportunities for Huntingdonshire and the wider North Hunts Growth Cluster.”

The Huntingdonshire Defence Cluster is an initiative led by Huntingdonshire District Council and the Ministry of Defence.

Other partners currently include Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, Newlands Development and Urban & Civic.

The University of Exeter is a founding member of the Defence Universities Alliance and an Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award holder, the network includes nearly 300 University of Exeter academics from across all disciplines, and the Data Defence Research Centre (DDRC) leads collaboration on AI and defence data management.
