Bioseparation Science for New Therapeutic Modalities

iBET took part in SPICA 2026, the 20th International Symposium on Preparative and Industrial Chromatography and Allied Techniques, held from 13 to 16 October 2026 in Switzerland.

The symposium is a multi-disciplinary forum for research and practical applications of preparative separation sciences, with themes that included therapeutic development, process intensification, digitalisation and sustainability.

Enabling new therapeutic modalities through advances in bioseparation science

Cristina Peixoto, head of Downstream Process Development Lab and coordinator of iBET’s Late Stage R&D Bioproduction Unit, gave the key note talk “Enabling New Therapeutic Modalities Through Advances in Bioseparation Science”.

The talk addressed how advances in bioseparation are responding to challenges in manufacturability, including tailored affinity ligands and new purification materials, continuous and integrated processes supported by in-line sensors and process analytical technology (PAT), and more sustainable chromatography. Examples from iBET’s work covered the integrated purification of AAV with enrichment of full capsids, affinity ligands for lentiviral vectors, continuous and affinity-based purification of extracellular vesicles, and the use of agro-industrial by-products to develop purification solutions for monoclonal antibodies.

Posters

iBET also presented two posters at the symposium:

  • Enerel Ariunbold, PhD student in iBET’s Downstream Process Development Lab “Streamlining AAV8 purification with integrated cyclic capture-polishing”.
  • Ana Nunes, Scientist at iBET’s Natural Bioactives and Nutraceuticals Lab and at iBET’s Technological platform: “Process intensification of Portisin purification by centrifugal partition chromatography from blueberry-derived anthocyanin extracts]”
