A look at the Defence news 30 August – 6 September

The Royal Netherlands Navy ship HNLMS Pelikaan recently transported 150,000 litres of drinking water from Curaçao to the port of La Guaira in Venezuela, destined for the regions affected by the earthquakes in June. Defence provided assistance at the request of the Venezuelan authorities.

Over the past two weeks, military personnel from 11 Airmobile Brigade participated in Exercise Quick Response in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this European Union Force (EUFOR) exercise, which is held in Sarajevo annually, Dutch service personnel trained together with military personnel from 24 other countries. Besides international cooperation, the exercise aims to promote a secure Bosnia and Herzegovina, while also working as a deterrent against Russia.

The stories and experiences of military veterans must be passed on to the next generations to honour their commitment and efforts, and because freedom, security and peace cannot be taken for granted. Netherlands Minister of Defence Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius emphasised this message during the commemoration at the National Indies Monument in Roermond last Saturday. The ceremony commemorated more than 6,400 Dutch and Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) soldiers who lost their lives between 1945 and 1962 during their deployment in the former Dutch East Indies and the former Dutch New Guinea. Tribute was also paid to military personnel who died in conflicts that have taken place since the Korean War.
