Výzkumně působil na Kent State University, University of Wisconsin a v IBM Research Center v Heidelbergu. V Berlíně byl vedoucím výzkumného centra MATHEON „Mathematics for key technologies“ a Einsteinova centra ECMath. Je členem redakcí několika odborných časopisů zaměřených na numerickou analýzu a šéfredaktorem časopisu Linear Algebra and its Applications. Jeho výzkumné zájmy zahrnují numerickou matematiku a vědecké výpočty, aplikovanou a numerickou lineární algebru, teorii řízení, teorii a numerické řešení diferenciálně-algebraických rovnic a matematické modelování založené na energetickém přístupu.
Abstrakt přednášky:
Mathematical models in form of differential equations are used in all areas of science and engineering for the simulation, control and optimization of real world physical systems. Ideally such models are close to the real physical system in the sense that the physical properties are encoded in the mathematical structure of the equations. The model equations should also be easy to analyze and allow for accurate and efficient numerical methods that reflect the physical properties as well. A modern modelling paradigm to achieve these goals is that of port-Hamiltonian systems, which originates from Hamilton dynamics enriched with inputs, outputs and constraints. We will describe this framework and analyze its properties from an algebraic, analytic, geometric and numerical point of view. We will also illustrate the successful use of the model class at the hand of district heating and gas transport networks.
