On the 5th Sunday of Easter, May 3, 2026, at the age of 85, in the 61st year of his priesthood and the 39th year of his episcopal ministry, Archbishop Józef Michalik, Archbishop Emeritus of Przemyśl of the Latin Rite, passed away. He was President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference from 2004 to 2014.
From 1986 to 1993, Archbishop Józef Michalik was the diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Zielona Góra-Gorzów (until 1992: Gorzów), and from 1993 to 2016 he was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Przemyśl. He served as Vice-President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference from 1999 to 2004, and then as its President for two terms from 2004 to 2014. He was also Vice-President of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences from 2011 to 2014.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Archcathedral Basilica in Przemyśl. Following the Eucharist, the body of Archbishop Józef Michalik will be laid to rest in the crypts of the Archcathedral.
