On Friday 24 January 2020, the findings of the European Hatemeter project, coordinated by the eCrime research group at the University of Trento, were presented in Italy, along with the Hatemeter platform, developed as a tool for monitoring, analysis and prevention.

The result of two years of scientific research

Islamophobia and hate speech are rife, particularly online. In 2019, a European report on Islamophobia showed that Muslims are among the main targets of hate speech in Europe. The research group formed as part of the Hatemeter project has developed a platform designed specifically for those working in the field of anti-discrimination, starting with non-governmental organisations. This ICT tool automatically monitors and analyses internet and social media data relating to anti-Muslim hate. Using artificial intelligence, it automatically generates responses and suggestions to support counter-narratives and awareness-raising campaigns. The platform operates using a combination of natural language processing, machine learning and big data analysis and visualisation. The platform has been validated through trials conducted in Italy, France and the United Kingdom by around two hundred operators and volunteers from the project’s three partner NGOs.The final version of Hatemeter was presented in December 2019 in Toulouse to academics, NGO representatives and police officers from across the European Union with the aim of:

raising awareness of this new tool,
gathering their feedback on the methodology used and the platform,
collecting advice on how to prevent and combat anti-Muslim hate online.
