In February 2026, the Council for Science and Technology (CST) provided advice to the Prime Minister on how the UK can achieve growth and global leadership in the photonics sector.

CST made 3 recommendations to government:

• Develop a national roadmap to provide a long-term vision and improve coordination.
• Use public procurement to support domestic industries.
• Expand international partnerships and export activities.
