Profesor Juan F. Gamella z Univerzity v Granadě představí na semináři výsledky svého multidisciplinárního výzkumu španělských Gitanos a rumunských Romů, zaměřeného na jejich sociální sítě, manželství, vzdělání i mechanismy zvládání konfliktů. Seminář nabídne přehled použitých metod a zdrojů a ukáže, jak tyto menšiny díky své odolnosti a schopnosti přizpůsobit se vytvářejí vlastní historii a kulturu navzdory stigmatizaci. Diskuse bude otevřena studentům i dalším zájemcům o studium marginalizovaných skupin.

Anotace přednášky v angličtině
In an open format, the seminar will review the approaches, methods, and sources used in the long-term study of two related yet distinct minorities that converged in Spain in the 21st century: The Gitanos/Calé in Andalusia and Madrid and the Roma Korturare studied in Spain and Transylvania. We will discuss the role of Gitano and Roma friends, students, and assistants in combining ethnography and ethnohistory with historical demographic sources. We will also discuss the use of photography and the role of the family photographer. The seminar will demonstrate the rich possibilities for comparison between the two groups, which exhibit considerable similarities as well as key differences.
One of our main research topics is what we call "Cultures of Reproduction," which includes marriage, gender, and kinship systems that have generated amazing reproductive success. These systems have helped maintain a way of life in the face of stigmatization, persecution, and racialization. Through their agency and resilience, Gitanos and Korturare Roma have created their own history, transforming mainstream religious and social institutions to suit their needs while producing cultural forms of transnational relevance.
The seminar is open to both graduate and undergraduate students, as well as other colleagues interested in the methodology of studying marginalised groups.
