UN Human Rights Council 61: UK Statement for the Interactive Dialogue on Nicaragua
UK Statement for the Interactive Dialogue with the Group of Experts on Nicaragua. Delivered at the 61st Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Thank you, Mr Vice President,
The UK thanks the Group of Experts for their recent report and are deeply concerned by the continued deterioration of human rights in Nicaragua and the ever-growing range of victims subjected to abuse. The report’s finding that violations may amount to crimes against humanity reinforces the need for sustained international scrutiny of the systemic dismantling of democratic institutions and repression of civil liberties in Nicaragua.
We are especially concerned by the report’s findings on gender‑based crimes, including sexual violence of comparable gravity to torture. Such violations inflict profound and lasting harm and must stop.
The report also highlights an alarming expansion of transnational repression, with intimidation and targeting extending beyond national borders. This pattern is unacceptable and threatens regional stability and the safety of exiled communities.
We note with deep regret that Nicaragua continues to refuse cooperation with the Group of Experts, leaving 21 communications unanswered. We urge Nicaragua to re-engage with the UN system, restore democratic space, and permit independent scrutiny of its actions.
Esteemed experts,
How can States best support victims of both gender-based and transnational repression?
Thank you.
