Anotace v angličtině
As we have become more global than ever before, the world seems to be ‘a small pot of too many different ingredients that not always match their tastes’ – the world being the pot and we being the ingredients.
We don’t want to melt into the crowd, lose our identity and personality; we rather want to fit in, that is, to understand others and be understood.
This lecture explores how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate in distinct ways, and how these differences shape our interactions. By examining a few key examples of cross-cultural communication styles and common sources of misunderstanding, the session emphasizes the importance of recognizing, respecting, and adapting to the needs of others. Extracts from entertaining, contemporary films that treat different cultures’ clashes and thus address this topic shall be used to make the topic more illustrative to the students and draw their attention to the importance of listening to the others’ needs and making them feel respected and valued. Being different, yourself is not a flaw, but a virtue that should be nurtured.
The goal (of the lecture) is to foster greater cultural awareness, reduce miscommunication, and build more meaningful, appreciative connections across cultures.
